While watching Severance, I noticed they frequently refer to four tempers; Frolic, Dread, Malice and Woe. It immediately made me think of The Wretched. A TTRPG that uses a deck of cards as an oracle to draw events. The Wretched is inspired by the Alien franchise and has a bleak hopelessness baked in…perfect for the dark undertones of Severance. Severance if you’re not familiar is an Apple TV show about people who have their work selves cut off from their memories.

The Wretched happens to have an open SRD ( The Wretched & Alone SRD) and a solid community around it. So the idea was born to make a Severance-themed solo TTRPG built using this system.

It took me a few months to finish. But I’m happy that it’s done. In the game, you play as an innie who has an insatiable hunger for snacks. As a player, you draw cards to trigger events, and then write a journal or record a vlog. Adding pressure is the presence of a Jenga tower. Trigger a bad event and you take a pull from the tower. If it falls you lose, a perfect way to represent the threat of Lumon.

It was a lot of fun adapting the world of Severance in a roleplaying game. It uses a lot of verbose, and disconcerting dialogue in the world. So I leant on that in places, while balancing this with the need to have text be understandable for players.
